Swoon's Musical House In New Orleans

Show & Tell Gallery artist Swoon is currently fundraising for a great project in New Orleans. Please follow this link to donate and help make it a reality.

From the salvaged remains of a decrepit Creole Cottage, the Brooklyn-based artist Swoon has re-imagined a permanent, interactive sculpture for the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans.

We call it the Dithyrambalina. It will look like a house, but it will function like a musical instrument. A growing group of local and national sound artists are working towards interactive instruments that can be built into its walls and floorboards so that visitors can bring the house to life through their touch. Ultimately, musicians will be invited to play the house, performing orchestrated works at block parties for their friends and neighbors. This project is for the love of New Orleans - its architecture, music, culture and its people.

Swoon has designed the look of house and we have formed coalitions with everyone from architects to salvage suppliers. The next phase of our project is to create instrumentation for the house. This Fall our sound artists will publicly test their prototypes in a temporary installation we are calling The Music Box - A Shantytown Sound Laboratory.

New Artist: Swoon

Show & Tell Gallery is very pleased to announce that a new artist has been added to the gallery's roster.

Caledonia Curry is a Brooklyn based artist better known under her moniker Swoon. Curry draws her inspiration from historical and folk sources as diverse as German Expressionist woodblock prints and Indonesian shadow puppets. Creating stunningly beautiful life-sized character studies from paper cutouts, woodblock prints and linocuts, her worlds are often populated by realistically rendered - and evocatively cut-out - street people, often her friends and family. Riding bikes, talking on a stoop, going grocery shopping - these people traverse a cityscape of her own unique invention. Swoon is a master of using cut paper to play with positive and negative space in a conceptually driven exploration of the experience of the streets. Her work can be found in sophisticated collections across the world including the MOMA in New York.

Swoon will be taking part in the gallery's 2 year anniversary group show opening at the beginning of March.

We will have several original works available in addition to a mixed media print edition that will be released exclusively through Show & Tell Gallery.

Terence Dick is a freelance writer living in Toronto. He is currently working on a catalogue essay for video artists Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby, an essay on Nuit Blanche, and a review of Marcus Boon’s In Praise of Copying. Show & Tell Gallery artist Dan Bergeron was recently asked to take part in a group show titled "Empire of Dreams" at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA). The premiss of the exhibition is to take a look at ways in which we exist in our built environment.

Dan's installation "Defunct Front" revisits his 2008 project with Specter "A City Renewal Project".

Empire of Dreams runs until August 15th at MOCCA.

Show & Tell Gallery will be hosting Dan's premier gallery exhibition this coming September.

Brick by Brick

This impressive new project by Toronto based artist Dan Bergeron recently went up in the Toronto Brickworks.

The Don Valley Brickworks operated for nearly 100 years and provided bricks used to construct many well-known Toronto landmarks such as Casa Loma, Osgoode Hall, Massey Hall and the Ontario Legislature. In 1928 the factory was sold and the name changed to the Toronto Brick Company. This change in ownership also saw the factory reach peak production of 25 million bricks per year. The kilns have been closed since 1984 and the property is currently owned and being revitalized by Evergreen.

"With some initial leads thanks to filmmaker Catherine Annau, I was able to make contact with some of the former workers who were employed when the factory shut down in 1984.

I visited each subject at the their home and I shot portraits of these proud men and installed their images in the factory's Kiln Building.

To create the brick pattern, I worked with my assistant, Joe Cornfield, to cut everything out on-site as the bricks were of different sizes and the mortar various widths and heights. An arduous task for sure, but a testament to the men who helped to build Toronto, brick by brick."

Show & Tell Gallery is proud to welcome Vladimir Kato to his second solo show with the gallery in as many years.

This exhibition is Vlad's take on the exploitations of wildlife. By using a range of unnatural and over exaggerated colors, Vlad aims to capture the chaotic personalities in the subjects he paints. Wilderness is a truly unique and amplified look at the idea of zoology.

Vladimir Kato is a graduate of the Interpretive Illustration and Classical Animation Programs at the Sheridan College of Art and Design. Since graduating he has done illustration for several recognized magazines and clothing companies, worked with award winning animation studios, and exhibited his fine art across the world.

Vladimir currently lives and works in Toronto.

Alëna's art reflects her deep affinity with animals and their poignant nature. Line refinement, organic hand done typography, and tasty (sometimes perverse) subject matter are some of Alëna's most common pursuits when it comes to illustration.

Alëna’s fine art illustrations have been recognized by American Illustration, 3X3 Magazine, Applied Arts, and Creative Quarterly. Her commercial clients include Milk, Nissan, and Chatelaine Magazine.

Kind Red is a body of work about kindred connections manifested by kindness. The animals and creatures in this body of work interact in symbiotic ways, denoting the beauty of reciprocation. The typographic elements that appear throughout the Kind Red series also reinforce Alëna's personal stance: that kindness is the most powerful taming agent, akin to the power of blood ties.
